Big Enough To Protect You, Small Enough To Care

What might you be asked during a child custody hearing?

Naturally, the questions you could be asked at a child custody hearing differ from case to case. There are always specific concerns and the answers you give can lead to more intensive questioning. However, if you're now getting ready for your first time in court, these are some questions you may face:

1. What do your finances look like? Do you work, or were you being supported by your spouse? This question can help determine if child support is needed, but, no matter how you obtain the money, the court will want to see that you can provide for and care for the child.

2. Do you and your ex communicate well? Communication is very important in joint custody settings. You need to be able to talk to one another and even work together for the good of the child.

3. What arrangement would you prefer? Do you want sole custody, or are you open to joint custody? Do you want to cut the other parent out completely, or are you both looking to stay involved? You'll also be asked why you answer the way that you do.

4. Are there any arrangements in place already, either formally or informally? Have you and your ex agreed on anything and do you have a system in place that you like, or do you need the court to make official orders about everything?

These are just a few of the questions you could be asked. Be sure you know your rights as a parent, what to expect in court, and how to seek the best solution for your children.
